Somerset Council is planning to launch automated telephone payments for a number of key services.
It said that from 5 December customers will be transferred to a new system named Touch Tone to make payments for council tax, business rates, housing and garage rents and parking fines.
The council said people will be able to make payments through their phones’ keypads and will not need to wait in a queue.
It is also upgrading its online payments system for these and other services.
Cllr Federica Smith-Roberts, lead member for communities, housing and culture, said: “Our customer service team make more than 30,000 payments a year and it’s important that we have a service that meets the needs of residents.
“The new improved payment system means people will be able to make some of the most important and frequent payments 24/7 throughout the years rather than having to wait on the phone for a member of staff.”
