NHS England has committed to spending a further £50 million on its NHS.UK portfolio, with a new contract with BJSS and a notice of increased spending with IBM.

It has awarded tech consultancy BJSS a three-year contract valued at £37.5 million to work on projects under the NHS.UK portfolio.

The contract came into effect at the beginning of the year, with the award notice stating it is for the delivery of large scale, public facing digital services including the NHS App and NHS Login.

Soon after, NHS England has published an updated award notice for an existing contract with IBM for the development of the NHS App – for which the company is prime contractor – reaffirming the existing end date of the end of June 2026 but stating a value of £65.5 million, up from the original figure of £52.4m million.

More app features

These have become public soon after the Department for Health and Social Care announced plans for new features for the app as one of the features of its Elective Reform Plan.

Plans include enabling users to view and manage appointments, choose from a range of providers – including in the independent sector – book diagnostic tests at locations such as community diagnostic centres, and receive test results before choosing the next step in their treatment.

BJSS already plays a significant role in supporting digital services for NHS England under an agreement from 2023 for it to provide DevOps services on the redevelopment of the NHS Spine platform.
