Wolverhampton City Council has said its 5G technology enabled care (TEC) programme is to undergo an evaluation.

It has commissioned Rethink Partners to carry out the evaluation of the programme, which began earlier this year and is funded by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology’s 5G Innovation Region scheme.

It is focused on three groups of people – over-65s, those with learning disabilities and those with physical disabilities – and the technology is being installed by Alcove.

The councils said that more than 100 referrals have already been made in the city for people to receive support through TEC solutions such as sensor devices, fall detectors and voice activated technologies – and that it is aiming to reach 350 by March 2024 before a further roll out.

Revolutionising care

Cllr Jasbir Jaspal, the council’s cabinet member for adults and wellbeing, said: “This initiative has the potential to revolutionise the way we do things harnessing technology to provide improved, personalised care for people.”

Cllr Obaida Ahmed, the cabinet member for digital and community, added: “The council is driven by digital to improve care and other services though innovation and partnership work and the city is at the forefront of the full fibre and 5G rollout that makes this possible.

“This is a great example of how technology can be put to good use helping those who need it most.”
