WISE, the campaign for greater gender balance in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), has launched a survey on people’s experiences of routes into relevant careers.
The Researching the Tech Landscape in 2021 Survey is intended as a first step in supporting employers to close the digital skills gap between genders.
It aims to quantify the different routes into tech based on age, gender, nationality and other characteristics, and will identify the current landscape, educational qualifications that tech employees have and need, training requirements and best practice on finding untapped pools of talent.
WISE chief executive Kay Hussain said: “The ongoing lack of women in tech is a real concern given that we have an enormous skills gap in these roles across all organisations, not just in the tech sector.
“Our project will help to shine a spotlight on what is going on in tech, the barriers and enablers for women and provide the first step in supporting employers to close their digital skills gap.”
The organisation said that just 17% of the tech workforce are women.
The announcement comes shortly after UKAuthority and public sector IT association Socitm announced a new initiative to build a network for women in digital, data and technology in the public sector.
