The Welsh Government’s digital team has developed a new log-in service for teachers to access digital tools and resources.
Named the all-Wales Education Identity Provider (AWE IdP), it has been created along with moving the management of the Hwb online platform – which provides access to bilingual tools and resources for teaching – in-house.
A Welsh Government Digital and Data Blog says it will enable teachers and learners to use a single sign-on for tools such as Microsoft Office 365 and Google for Education through their Hwb usernames.
The move has involved moving from an on-premise Active Directory database to a cloud hosted Azure Active Directory, and the development of a new user management portal for school administrators. The team says this laid the ground for about 5,000 successful password resets in the first week of operation.
It has been followed up by establishing direct links between the national user database and the management information systems in schools.
The blog adds that taking Hwb in-house will make it possible to make changes and develop the platform quickly in response to feedback from users and changes in the education curriculum.
