NHS Wales is aiming to provide a new critical care clinical information system (CCCIS) for the country’s hospitals.

It is aiming to move away from the paper based legacy solution to a digital system for all critical care units.

Velindre NHS Trust is running a procurement for the system in its capacity of hose of the NHS Wales Informatics Service.

The notice says it wants a new system to automatically pull data directly from bedside monitors and medical devices such as ventilators, infusion pumps and other equipment. It should also link with other hospital systems such as those for pathology results and patient administration, and with the Welsh Clinical Portal.

The initial scope of the contract is for approximately 200 adult critical care beds, but it requires the flexibility to increase this over the seven-year term.

NHS Wales plans to implement the system in a phased approach in line with an agreed plan.

Velindre has estimated that the investment could be worth up to £10 million.

The Welsh Clinical Portal brings together and displays patient information from a number of sources, and enables clinicians to send, receive and manage electronic referrals, and receive various test results and access patient records.
