The Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD) has said it will use the Clue database to support its new Intelligence Unit.

It is also preparing to launch new online forms for reporting – anonymously if required – of concerns on supply problems, product defects and the illegal misuse of animal medicines.

VMD, which is an agency of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, said the moves are being made following a review of its enforcement processes, which led to a desire for a more targeted approach to handling information it receives.

It said Clue – which is used by other enforcement agencies including the NHS Counter Fraud Authority – will enable it to interrogate and disseminate intelligence with its regulatory partners in a secure environment.

This will be accompanied by forms on its reporting website and a new hotline telephone number – 01932 338338.
