Exeter City Council uses GPS-enabled devices in waste crews' vehicles to record and manage waste collection data, saving a total of £490,000. A web-based self-service form allows residents to check bin collection data 24 hours a day which has greatly reduced phone calls to the council's contact centre. And waste crews can work more efficiently, by tackling issues as they arise. There are further potential uses for the satellite data too, such as to monitor and protect local trees (read our coverage). Watch the video and find out more about the service via several perspectives.
A recent Local Digital event 'Making Efficiencies using Satellites - it's not rocket science' Discovery Day, jointly hosted by Space for Smarter Government Programme, in Didcot, Oxfordshire presented the basics of satellite application opportunities for local services. The free, day-long event showcased how satellite data is already being used by local authorities and allowed participants to co-design a road map to improve local services and save money using satellite-enabled services.
