A group of UK universities have joined an initiative to use data science in developing new solutions in environmental sustainability.
Leicester, Loughborough, Keele, Coventry and Surrey Universities are taking part in the Sustainability Exploration Environmental Data Science (SEEDS) programme, launched by IT and business consultancy CGI with the support of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
CGI said it is aimed at accelerating efforts to address climate change, developing technology solutions and strengthening research in the field.
Research areas will include climate mitigation and adaptation, natural capital accounting, chemicals and waste reduction and supply chain sustainability.
It will also be aimed at the creation of new low carbon business models.
Fascinating vision
"I am fascinated by the vision behind the SEEDS programme and eagerly look forward to working with CGI to research and develop AI and digital twin models for a sustainable world," said Professor Anjum Ashiq, professor of distributed systems and director of enterprise and impact, School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences at the University of Leicester.
