Transport for Wales (TfW) is aiming to develop a national mobility-as-a-service (MaaS) solution, with an indication that it could be based on its existing rail services app.

It has published a market notice for a technology partner, projecting a spend of £2.3 million over five years, saying it will involve working with the existing app and web development partners.

While TfW is primarily known as the train operating company for Wales, it is tasked with further development of the country’s transport network and is aiming to provide a wider ranging, multimodal service.

It has plans for a new solution – which will be bilingual in Welsh and English – providing information on bus and coach routes, demand responsive transport, car clubs, bike hire, e-scooters, taxis, cycling and walking routes, with the capacity to promote journeys using contactless payments and door-to-door journey planning.

Analytics and integration

It would also include a customer analytics capacity and the scope for third party developers to integrate other solutions.

“Our digital platforms will be positioned as a trusted digital travel companion for every journey in Wales and we aim to provide a user experience which is honest, useful, human and engaging,” the notice says.

The plan would make Wales the first country in the UK to develop a MaaS app that goes beyond local or regional boundaries.
