For many years Information Governance (IG) has been seen as a blocker to change. However, the covid pandemic showed the need to resolve key frontline issues quickly not only to improve health and care but to enable increased research and to inform policy and decision makers.

Dawn Monaghan, interim director of IG policy, ethics and head of profession at NHSE & I, told the UKAuthority Integrating Digital Health and Care conference that capitalising upon the lessons learned the new data strategy commits to transform the approach to IG with four priorities.

These include to review the ways in which IG is delivered and perceived; secondly to establish and promote the evolution a professional IG service; then to remove the climate of fear and build understanding and confidence across the workforce and finally to shift focus and performance measurements from fines to benefits.
