The future of planning – Future Cities Catapult aims for transformation

Housing is fundamental to our future, says Euan Mills, urban futures lead at the Future Cities Catapult. Yet real time data and insights to aid planning is rare.

Mills believes that we can we use data and technology – including artificial intelligence - to bridge this gap, to rapidly find and assess brownfield land ripe for redevelopment and plan for the future. New technologies such as augmented reality, he adds, can help us engage the public with planning and head off the NIMBYs.

Meanwhile, a project with Southwark and Wikihouse is using real time data and machine learning to see whether the time spent processing applications can be cut by half, giving space for planners to spend time on the complex cases. The target? Deciding a planning application within six seconds.
