Two sites in Rhyl have become the first to use the new Electronic Prescription Service (EPS) for Wales.
Lakeside Medical Centre GP practice and Wellington Road Pharmacy are testing the EPS, which is scheduled for a national roll out to begin in January 2024.
It has been developed over the past 20 months by the Digital Medicines Transformation Portfolio (DMTP), making it possible for patients to pick up repeat prescriptions without going to their GP and simplifying the reimbursement process for community pharmacies.
The development has been supported by the Community Pharmacy System Innovation Fund – created by DMTP with the Life Sciences Hub Wales – which has provided grants to suppliers of pharmacy systems.
Wales’ Health and Services Minister Eluned Morgan said: “We are at the start of an exciting digital transformation that will completely change the way prescriptions are managed in primary care, streamlining a process that has not changed in decades.
“Electronic prescriptions will make a huge difference to the NHS and patients and this is a major milestone in our journey towards digitising every prescription in every healthcare setting across Wales.”
