Team Fisher has taken over the running of the Royal Navy’s Maritime Composite Training System (MCTS).

The Capita led consortium has begun to operate the system at two locations – HMS Collingwood, Hampshire, and HMNB Devonport, Devon – with 73 people joining the teams.

The MCTS is a software based simulator that replicates the warfare operations rooms found on Royal Navy warships, such as Type 23 frigates and Type 45 destroyers.

It enables trainees to develop and test their skills, individually and as part of their operational team, by participating in warfare stimulations while operating the same stations they would be occupying while at sea.

The training comprises a range of real world scenarios, such as dealing with surface, sub-surface, air attacks or combination of all three, with representations of both friendly and enemy vessels and aircraft. Trainees can also participate in exercises focusing on their individual roles, such as a radar operator, as well as whole bridge exercises.

Flexibility

The environment is highly configurable, making it possible to develop specific professional skills for individuals in one part of the facility while providing joint training for crews in another area.

Team Fisher is now responsible for technical management, support and maintenance of MCTS, design and delivery of training using the simulator, facilities management, planning, course scheduling and training environment set-up, data and management information, quality assurance, and user experience management.

Over time and in collaboration with the Royal Navy it will carry out a technical refresh of the MCTS to provide the best fidelity and to future proof the capability.

Colonel Aaron Fisher, Commandant Training Management Group, said: “This is an exciting milestone in the Royal Navy’s ambition to truly modernise our training.

“It will enable our sailors to conduct demanding training to develop confidence in their abilities, in a scalable synthetic environment, for the broad spectrum of missions and tasks they may encounter as an individual operator or as part of a command team on operations.”

Consortium members

Team Fisher also includes Raytheon UK, Elbit Systems UK, Fujitsu, the University of Lincoln and several smaller British suppliers, and is modernising the Royal Navy and Royal Marines’ shore based training.

Earlier this year Elbit Systems took on the management of simulators for functions such as operator training, command training and collective training for Trafalgar class and Vanguard class submarines and Mine Counter Measure Vessels.
