A network of CCTV cameras has been connected to high capacity fibre in the London Borough of Sutton under an agreement with Boldyn Networks.
The company – formerly BAI Communications – indicated that the network will initially be used to boost image quality and reliability of 21 CCTV cameras to support public safety.
It will not be used for traffic control, but can provide the foundation for the use of internet of things (IoT) technologies. These could include sensors to monitor air quality and congestion and to support public safety measures.
The project has been funded by the Greater London Authority through Transport for London following a successful bid as part of the Government’s Getting Building Fund. The network will form part of the Connected London programme.
Sutton has been one of the leading boroughs in London for the deployment of IoT technology, notably as a member of the InnOvaTe programme and with projects such as the monitoring of air quality near schools and to combat fly tipping.
Digital innovations
Its lead member for resources, Cllr Sunita Gordon, said: “Part of being an efficient and well run council is looking to the latest digital innovations to help connect and better serve our residents.
“Through this partnership with Boldyn Networks and the Greater London Authority we have enhanced our digital connectivity which will help to ensure that the borough is better connected now and in the future, as well as making sure we remain the safest place to live in London through better connected CCTV.”

Virgin Media Wholesale was third party supplier for the connections to the network.
