Sutton Council has signed open access agreements with three network service providers to boost mobile connectivity around the borough.
It has announced deals with Ontix, Freshwave and Cellnex to share council owned assets such as lamppostss for the deployment of new infrastructure, saying they are the first of their kind in the UK.
The companies will deploy small cell nodes to provide coverage to existing ‘not spots’ in the London borough, under an operational and commercial framework that prioritises the swift deployment of digital infrastructure when and where it is needed.
Deployments of the small cells are due to begin soon.
Councillor Sunita Gordon, lead member for resources, said: “I’m pleased to see us making good progress to improve the digital connectivity within Sutton. This will be a huge boost to residents, particularly those living, working or visiting the so called ‘not spots’, and will also be a very welcome improvement to our infrastructure for local businesses.”
The move is also expected to provide a foundation for the spread of 5G in Sutton.
The council has a digital strategy that says it has a responsibility to support the deployment of modern infrastructure and emphasising the potential of 5G. It says the majority of applications erect new masts will be subject to a light touch regime.
