Council invites residents to come up with new ways for people to find community services
Stockport Council has called on residents and IT developers to take part in a hackathon this coming weekend, aimed at developing new ways for people to find community services and activities.
It will run the event at one of its municipal buildings, Fred Perry House, on Saturday 4 March as part of its Digital Stockport programme and to mark the recent relaunch of its website.
The council has said the event is open to anyone over 16 years old and that participants can form their own teams or join others on the day. They have to take their own technical equipment.
Participants will be given the opportunity to present their ideas to a panel of judges, including a representative from Government Digital Service and others from the local tech community, the council and local businesses.
Councillor David Sedgwick, executive member for reform and governance, said: “We hope to draw on the enormous resource of skill and creativity that exists in Stockport and harness innovative new ideas for the good of the wider community. This is a great opportunity for participants to learn something new, enjoy making things with like-minded people and use their skills to enrich the lives of others and improve the place they live in.”
Stockport is making community engagement and efforts to build up local digital skills an element of its ongoing transformation programme, which has involved a relaunch of its website to promote self-service and a heavy investment on its internal digital capabilities, including the council intranet. It is planning to introduce a new feature on its website to guide people towards community services provided by other organisations.
