Stockport Council has launched a free digital skills training programme for young people in the Greater Manchester area.
Named Shift Click, it is being delivered with the not-for-profit Manchester Digital Laboratory (MadLab) and is funded by the Fast Track Digital Workforce Fund – a joint venture between the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, Greater Manchester Combined Authority and the Lancashire Digital Skills Partnership.
It initially involves two programmes: an 8-10 week part time introduction to coding; and a 14-week full time developer programme. They are open to any college leaver from Greater Manchester and do not require any qualifications or prior experience.
Councillor Kate Butler, Stockport’s cabinet member for citizen focus and engagement, said: “Digital is a key growth area both nationally and regionally and there is currently a shortage of people with the right skills.
“We’re delighted to launch this new opportunity in Stockport for young people to gain the right skills and knowledge to enter the tech industry and benefit from the mentorship and experience of industry experts.”
