South Tyneside Council has awarded North a £600,000 contract to deliver a new CCTV control centre.

The company will design the centre with the integration of multiple security systems merging access control, intruder detection and life safety, and relocate it from the site of the existing facility.

The new centre, which is expected to be complete by September of this year, will make use of wireless redeployable cameras to monitor spaces such as schools, fly tipping spots and high traffic zones.

North said this will help the council create cleaner, safer and greener environments.

The company will also provide a five-year support service package including the maintenance of public space CCTV cameras and an upgrade from analogue to digital devices to provide superior quality images.

Vital tool

South Tyneside’s lead member for housing and community safety, Cllr Jim Foreman, said: “CCTV is a vital tool in helping our residents feel safe and secure. As well as acting as a deterrent and helping detect crime and anti-social behaviour, it can also help us monitor and manage events in real time and assist the emergency services.

“This state of the art technology is replacing older, outdate cameras to provide better image quality and enhanced night time vision.

“Creating strong communities, where people live in safe neighbourhoods, is one of the council’s five ambitions, and tackling crime and anti-social behaviour is key to realising that.”
