The South London Partnership is planning two new projects using internet of things (IoT) technology to monitor usage of local green spaces and the security of a building set to be demolished.
The group of five London boroughs – Croydon, Kingston upon Thames, Merton, Richmond upon Thames and Sutton – is working with IoT service and solutions provider North and software development firm Daizy on the projects.
Sutton Council will use the technology to review the use of its green spaces, installing sensors around seven parks in the borough to provide footfall data from 30 key points of interest, including entrance points and access to playgrounds.
This is aimed providing insights on whether the local community is getting the best use from the green space and if new investment is needed.
Kingston Council is placing sensors throughout 130 residential properties in a building scheduled for demotion. They will notify central systems of any movement to combat antisocial behaviour and ensure that it remains empty to meet health and safety standards.
The projects are supported by £160,000 from Innovate UK.
Transforming communities
Mike Lowe, business development director at North, said: “The pilot projects in South London demonstrate two excellent examples of how smart IoT technology can be used to transform our communities.
“Used in two different areas for varying purposes, they will both use data to improve the local community – one to ensure safety and combat antisocial behaviour and the other to improve local green spaces for those living nearby.”
