South Hams District Council and West Devon Borough Council have installed a new virtual private network (VPN) solution to support mobile working and protect sensitive data.
The two councils, which have a shared workforce, have completed the implementation of the Pulse Secure VPN and a secure access platform from ANSecurity.
The move was prompted by a transformation in working practices at the councils and involved opting for an ‘always on’ VPN. This uses a device ID to authenticate a user on the network, circumventing the need for a manual sign-in.
It has enabled more than 100 staff to use the VPN to log into the office network and supported a move towards hot desking.
Mike Ward, the councils’ head of IT commented: “Security of this type is an enabler to the way we work - we couldn't do it without a VPN.”
