Sheffield Children’s Hospital has run a ‘paper picnic’ to support the digitisation of its patient records.
It involved more than 200 clinical staff taking paper files to be recorded, categorised and laid on the floor in the style of a picnic blanket to prompt discussion on the types of files used.
The hospital will now run a series of workshops to remove and duplicate and unnecessary documents and ensure that those left can go into digital format. It will then digitise the relevant documents.
The exercise is being carried out with software provider System C Healthcare under its Visualise, Optimise and Digitise (VOD) programme, which was developed with Barking, Hearing and Redbridge University Hospitals.
Kevin Connolly, CIO at Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust, said: “The paper picnic and other stages of the VOD programme are wonderful examples of the co-creation principles that we embrace here at Sheffield Children’s.
“It has helped us make digitisation engaging, relevant and accessible, and it highlights the multi-disciplinary nature of our organisation. I’m really pleased with how the day has gone, and I’m looking forward to the next stage.”
