Move responds to recommendation in Learner Journey Review
The Scottish Government is planning to set up an online support account for every school pupil and student in the country.
Deputy First Minister John Swinney (pictured) announced the move, which responds to one of 17 recommendations in the newly published 15-24 Learner Journey Review.
From 2019, pupils will have their own learner account where they can record their skills and qualifications and receive help in planning next steps into further learning or work.
It will involve Skills Development Scotland building on the existing My World of Work website to link with existing digital services in schools in creating an account that enables learners to record their attributes, skills and qualifications. This should follow them beyond school and help them plan their approach into work.
Digital hub
It reflects the aim for a one-stop shop approach, delivered through a digital hub, to provide signposts of qualifications, pathways and support for learners.
Other recommendations to be taken forward include more joined up advice and guidance on post-school options and the provision of a better balance of work based and academic skills.
Swinney said: “Ensuring the right advice, support and guidance fits seamlessly around a pupil is vital. Schools, colleges, universities and employers must work together to help young people navigate what is, rightly, a wide and varied range of post-school opportunities.
“Taking forward these recommendations will require strong leadership across the sector but will ensure all young people are supported to take the learner journey that is right for them.”
