The Scottish Government’s Digital Directorate has gone public with plans for a cloud platform service for the public sector.
It is working with Amazon Web Services (AWS) on a launch event in Edinburgh on 19 September.
The service will be available to all Scottish public sector organisations, providing simplified access to cloud services in the AWS and Microsoft environments, which the directorate said have attracted the highest demand in the sector. It is set to run indefinitely depending on demand and funding.
Other cloud environments will be considered for the service if the appropriate level of demand is identified.
Benefits and security
A Scottish Government spokesperson said: “The Scottish Government Cloud Platform gives Scottish public sector organisations the opportunity to harness the benefits of cloud technology while making sure high standards of cyber security are met.
“The service will help save procurement time and costs across the public sector because organisations will not have to duplicate their efforts when setting up cloud accounts. They will also be able to access advice on how they can make further savings by being more efficient in how they use their clouds.
“The Scottish Government will keep working closely with public sector organisations through our Cloud First group to share knowledge and best practice so we can support one another and realise the benefits of cloud computing.”
A number of AWS partner companies will also be involved the launch event.
