The Scottish Dog Control Database has gone live, bringing together dog control notices into a central database accessible by local authorities and Police Scotland.
It has been developed by the Digital Public Services (DPS) team at the Improvement Service and backed by the Scottish Government.
The release is based on a prototype from 2021 and includes improvements and extra capacity.
It has been developed from a need for councils and the police to understand the offending dog in any reported incident and whether there are any existing notices in place.
A Scottish Government consultation on the issue, the results of which were published in 2020, identified concerns about a rising number of attacks on people.
A real difference
Martin Brown, head of Digital Public Services, said: “The Scottish Dog Control Database is going to make a real difference to community safety, enabling councils and Police Scotland to check the background of any dogs which are cause for concern.”
The Improvement Service indicated that the database has been developed to be scaled up and amended to support any future policy changes.
