NHS England is investing in a digital learning platform to support the take-up of digital pathology technology in the health service.

Minister of Health and Secondary Care Andrew Stephenson referred to the project in response to a parliamentary question on what additional training is being given to pathologists to use digital systems.

He said that NHS England is working with the Royal College of Pathologists on the ongoing development of a Pathology Portal, which will support trainees and established practitioners in ensuring that digital learning materials are widely available.

Stephenson added that NHS England plans to issue guidance soon to support local providers of histopathology services who wish to implement digital pathology for the three cancer screening programmes.

Earlier this month, the Department for Health and Social Care announced a plan to increase the use of digital pathology in the health service, with guidance on the best way to use the technology.
