The Open Data Institute (ODI) has set up a group with members from the UK and overseas to provide input into its data trust pilots.
Named the Data Trust Exploration Group, its member organisations include innovation charity Nesta, the Information Commissioner’s Office, the European Commission and Open Data China.
Its purpose will also include sharing some of the findings to emerge from the programme and connecting together organisations working on similar initiatives around the world.
The move is the next step in a process that has involved the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport pledge funding for the data trust programme, and the ODI plan two pilot projects – one with the Government Office of AI, the other with the Greater London Authority and Greenwich Council – on the activities of trusts.
They are being tested for the potential of providing independent third party stewardship of data in areas such as city developments, environment and transport.
ODI said the group will initially operate over the duration of its pilot work, which are running through the early part of this year, but if it proves valuable it may be sustained for the longer term and aim to expand its membership.
“We attempted to select a range of people and organisations that is diverse across a number of characteristics, in order to reflect a broad range of interests and expertise,” the ODI said.
