Development of audit solution lays ground for more doctors and pharmacists to see GPs’ summary information
A wider range of doctors and pharmacists are going to obtain access to a summary of patients’ GP records.
The NHS Wales Informatics Service has said it will make the summary, currently only for those working in emergency care settings, available across the board by the end of the month.
This follows the creation of the National Intelligent Integrated Audit Solution (NIIAS) to raise the security standards around the use of the record.
The organisation announced the move with an assurance that the information will be held in a secure database and an auditable log will be made whenever it is accessed.
The doctor or pharmacist will have to ask for permission to view the record at every consultation, and if patients wish they can opt out of the system entirely by speaking to their GP.
Dr Charlotte Jones, chair of the General Practitioners Committee of BMA Wales, said: “The establishment of the NIIAS and the health boards and trusts’ formal commitment to monitor access to the patient record using this system has provided GPC Wales with full assurance that the extension of access will be safe, secure and will advance the ability to provide safer clinical care to the patient.”
