The team behind the NHS Spine has outlined the early benefits it is aiming to achieve through a rebuild of the platform.
It said this follows the early rounds of its Spine Futures programme, which began in April of last year with the aim of developing a new version over the next two to three years.
Writing in a blogpost, Shan Rahulan, director core services, and Mark Burton, lead delivery manager Spine Futures, said the plan is to move Spine products to cloud to strengthen cyber resilience and switch to a product-centric operating model.
They pointed to initial ambitions including making it easier to use the Messaging Exchange for Health and Social Care (MESH) product suite, reducing the development cycle compliance with NHS architecture principles, reducing carbon emissions, cutting the number of support requests and making it easier for new suppliers to integrate with Spine services.
Cloud native
In addition, cloud native tooling and services are expected to reduce the development effort and cost.
Rahulan and Burton added that the first milestone in the programme had been passed last December with the replacement of the MESH with a cloud based version.
The team, in the NHS England Transformation Directorate, is currently running a series of bi-monthly webinars for health and social care professionals to provide input into the programme.
