NHS Shared Business Services (NHS SBS) has made an online platform available for health service employees to access part of their pay in advance.

Named Earnd, it has been created with an app developer of the same name and will be available to NHS users through the existing MySBSPay app.

NHS SBS, the joint venture between the Department of Health and Social Care and Sopra Steria, said it will help to provide more flexible and regular payments for staff, and incentivise healthcare professionals to join its own staff bank rather than work through more expensive agencies.

Once adopted by an organisation, its employees can access Earnd through MySBSPay, going through a one-off registration. It gives them the option of accessing a proportion of their earnings – set by the organisation – in advance of payday with no limit on the number of transactions.

NHS SBS said this will give them more control over their finances and help to alleviate the stress of unexpected expenses.

Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust has become the first organisation to make Earnd available to its workforce.

Tasy Warn (pictured), director of employment services at NHS SBS, said: “NHS SBS is committed to helping our NHS partners make better use of technology to enhance the quality of their non-clinical services – with user experience, digitisation and interoperability at the very heart of our new innovations.

“The new NHS People Plan rightly places significant emphasis on the wellbeing of NHS employees. Our new partnership with Earnd is about providing the NHS with easy access to digital technologies, which improve the lives of critical healthcare workers across the country, and save more time and money for patient care.”
