NHS Shared Business Services (NHS SBS) is planning to set up a new procurement framework for AI solutions in healthcare.

Named Healthcare Artificial Intelligence Solutions, it will replace the frameworks for AI Software in Neuroscience for Stroke Decision Support and AI Imaging and Radiotherapy Equipment, which are due to expire in September.

NHS SBS said the new framework is at an early stage of development but is expected to consist of six lots: radiology and diagnostic imaging; pathological diagnosis and early detection; predictive analytics; research and development; operational efficiency; and specialist support.

It is currently inviting input by email from potential customers into the shape of the framework.

The organisation – a joint venture between the Department of Health and Social Care and Sopra Steria – made the announcement the day after the Government published an action plan to boost the development and use of AI in the UK, which includes a strong emphasis on the technology’s potential in public services.

Value in healthcare

Kelly Bevington, senior category manager for digital and IT at NHS SBS, said that AI can help with a variety of tasks in the health service, including: accurate diagnosis by analysing large amounts of data; recommending effective treatments; quickly producing the results of screenings in preventative care; and helping in the management of resources.

It can also help clinicians in applying best practice, deliver predictive techniques to support planning in local health systems, and provide intuitive tools for capturing data as a by-product of care.

“AI has the potential to transform NHS patient care, speeding up diagnosis and treatment times by ensuring that expert clinical resource is targeted where it has the greatest impact for the patient,” Bevington said.

“Our new framework agreement will focus on the application of AI in different specialities by providing new efficient ways to prevent, diagnose, treat illness and optimise clinical workflow.”
