The AI skunkworks team in the NHS Transformation Directorate has called for applications to develop a new round of proof of concept projects on using AI to solve problems in health and care.

It said it will accept applications from within the Department for Health and Social Care, arm’s length bodies in the sector, public sector healthcare organisations and NHS and health and social care trusts.

It has indicated that a strong application will focus on a problem and what needs to be done to solve it, taking into account factors such as whether an organisation has access to the necessary data.

“We are keen that each project will contribute to the wider knowledge base of AI in health and care,” the directorate said in the invitation blogpost. “This means you must commit to working in the open.

“We will be publishing blog posts and sharing information about the project as widely as possible, and the source code of data pipelines and the model (not the data itself, of course) will be released under an open licence.”

It also referred to previous skunkworks projects such as using AI to find optimal placement schedules for nursing students and to support bed allocation.
