The NHS Digital Academy is planning to launch a cyber security apprenticeship scheme under its Cyber Improvement Programme.

The level 4 (L4) cyber security technologist apprenticeship is being developed as a 24-month programme aimed at people in the health service who are looking to develop their understanding of key cyber security concepts and techniques.

It comprises three options, one being for the role of cyber security engineer, typically designing, building and testing secure networks or security products or systems with a particular focus on the security aspects of the design.

The second is for cyber security risk analysts, with a focus on risk assessment, analysis and giving advice on risk mitigations. The role may support formal security governance, regulatory and compliance.

Thirdly, the role of cyber security defender and responder focuses on operational tasks, such as configuring and operating secure systems to prevent breaches and monitoring systems to detect and respond to incidents.

They will lead to industry recognised qualifications as Comp TIA Network, Comp TIA Security and EC-Council certified network defender (CND).

September start

The academy said the first cohort from NHS England will begin the courses in September. They will be delivered online by education provider BPP with the option of a free residential session.

Announcing the scheme, NHS Digital Academy said: “The NHS’s shift towards digital health and the rise in sophisticated cyber security threats have reinforced the need for a robust cyber security workforce within the NHS.

“To address this challenge and future proof its digital infrastructure, the Cyber Improvement Programme has launched its first ever cyber security apprenticeship scheme.

“This marks a significant step forward in the NHS’s commitment to safeguarding sensitive patient data and critical healthcare systems.

“Designed to attract and nurture talent, the programme aligns with the Cyber Security Strategy for Health and Social Care 2023 to 2030.”

The academy said that interested candidates should seek approval from their line managers and speak to their organisation’s apprenticeship lead, who can contact BenBlack@bpp.com.
