The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) has highlighted a new increase in ransomware attacks on the UK education sector over recent weeks.

It said it is investigating the rise and has updated its earlier alert with additional information.

NCSC has urged all organisations to follow its guidance on mitigating malware and ransomware, which was updated in March, to sign up to its free Early Warning Service, which uses a range of information feeds to notify organisations malicious activity on submitted domains and IPs.

“It is also important that senior leaders understand the nature of the threat and the potential for ransomware to cause considerable damage to their institutions in terms of lost data and access to critical services,” it said.

A number of education institutions have had their services disrupted by cyber attacks in recent months, including the University of Hertfordshire, Harris Federation, Queen’s University Belfast and the University of Central Lancashire.
