The Royal Navy is aiming to step up the use of its recently developed Nelson data platform.
It has begun a procurement for a digital services partner, looking for it to help in the rapid development of applications using the platform and to give it a sustainable footing within the organisation.
Nelson has been developed with the support of CTI Digital as a big data platform for the Navy, aimed at supporting its use of advanced data analytics and AI. It is being made available ashore and at sea, providing all the appropriate data through one system.
The development is part of the Navy’s digital transformation programme.
The team behind it has already created a design standards toolkit and boilerplate app, published to open source, and produced a public facing standards website.
It now needs to establish a core team and scalable resource to handle different projects, which the Navy wants run with a light touch.
Prime needs
It identified the needs as: an on-demand digital service for taking applications through discovery phases; the ability to quickly spin up digital delivery teams; to support the use of Nelson in knowledge transfer, developing digital leaders and building in-house digital capabilities; and helping it to deliver at scale.
The platform can be used by applications developers, Navy officers, civil servants and some suppliers.
