National Highways has agreed on a £4 million contract with consultancy PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) to work on its Identity and Access Modernisation (IAM) programme.

It has just published the award notice for a contract that came into effect in May and is scheduled to run for two years, with PwC providing software development services in support of the programme.

It is aimed at dealing with perceived cyber security risks from a “manual, fragmented”, insecure and inefficient” existing system for managing user identities and permissions in National Highways’ digital systems.

The notice emphasises that privileged accounts and credentials used to access the agency’s critical systems are insufficiently protected and vulnerable to exploitation from external and insider threats, which in turn could disrupt the strategic road network.

This has promoted the improvement programme to implement new solutions for identity and privileged access management.

Internal skills shortage

“National Highways does not have the internal skills to deliver this, so the delivery of this programme will not only protect sensitive data and critical services but also foster a culture of security across the organisation, safeguarding long term success and reputation, while improving user experience and ways of working both internally and with our supply chain across all directorates,” the notice says.

It adds that by dealing with the issues National Highways should significantly enhance its security posture.
