National Grid Electricity System Operator (ESO) has reached agreement with Energy Exemplar to use its Plexos unified energy market simulation platform.

They have signed a contract to run for three years, with the options of two one-year extensions, for the use of the data modelling tool to plan for the energy system over the next 20-30 years.

Energy Exemplar said it will help shape future energy scenarios, setting out potential pathways to net zero by 2050, and shape the Network Operations Assessment report, which National Grid ESO is required to publish each year in providing recommendations for investment.

The platform will also support offshore network modelling for proposed wind turbine farms.

Ian Shepherd, enhanced network capability development manager at National Grid ESO, said: “Plexos will further strengthen the analysis the ESO undertakes to identify the optimal pathways to net zero and will support the ESO in assessing the optimal pathways for future network infrastructure decisions, ensuring that we can continue to deliver a network that is secure, reliable and delivers value for consumers as we move towards net zero.”
