The Ministry of Defence has awarded IT and business consultancy CGI the contract to develop the Borealis system for the civil-military National Space Operations Centre (NSpOC).

Along with UK Space Command and the UK Space Agency they have agreed on a contract worth £64.8 million to run for just over three years until the end of March 2028.

The contract award notice says this will involve the development of software for space domain awareness and space command and control, combining and coordinating civilian and military capabilities to enable space operations.

NSpOC develops and operates the UK’s space surveillance and protection capabilities. It is planning to build on its existing Aurora system with the development of Borealis, which will collate and process information across multiple classifications up to Top Secret to monitor space and support timely decision making with allies and partners.

It will integrate multiple current and future systems and sensors as well as other data sources, and be subject to iterative development over time.
