The Ministry of Defence (MoD) and UK Space Agency are planning a joint project to develop core IT systems for National Space Operations Centre.

Named Project BOREALIS, it is aimed at support military and civil operations, with the development of software to generate space domain awareness and space command and control.

MoD has published a prior information notice for the relevant IT services, with a projected spend of £50 million.

“The BOREALIS system will process and collate information, across multiple classifications, up to Top Secret, in order to monitor the space domain, conduct space operations and support timely decision making in collaboration with allies and partners,” the notice says.

“It will integrate multiple current and future systems and sensors as well as other data sources. It will incorporate the functionality of the current in-service system AURORA which will feed into BOREALIS and will need to be developed and supported alongside the creation of new system and functionality.”

It adds that agile methodology will be used in the development of the capabilities.
