Dacorum and Bournemouth Councils pick up data quality and improvement prizes from national addressing organisation
Mid Sussex District Council has won the Exemplar Award 2018 presented by national address and street information organisation GeoPlace.
The council won the award for its work using its local address register to underpin a bid for money from the chancellor’s £190 million Local Full Fibre Networks Challenge Fund to encourage the roll out of fibre broadband.
It gave it the top prize among those handed out by the organisation, which is a joint venture between the Local Government Association and Ordnance Survey and maintains a national infrastructure of address and street information.
To submit a bid to the fund, Mid Sussex had to demonstrate its proposal would harness public sector connectivity to deliver a significant economic benefit to the local economy, driving up inward investment and the growth of local businesses; particularly those in the digital economy.
In doing this, it highlighted how local address data is used as a decision support tool in combination with a focused deployment of geospatial data using GIS. Data from the Local Land and Property Gazetteer, maintained by GeoPlace, was critical in assessing the potential economic benefit that would accrue from a successful roll out of a full fibre network.
The bid resulted in an award of £2.2 million. from the fund in the 2018 Spring Statement.
Data winners
Dacorum Borough Council and Bournemouth Borough Council were announced as winners of the Data Quality and Improvement Award for Addresses 2018 and the Data Quality and Improvement Award for Streets 2018 respectively.
The winner of the Peer Award was Ian David, who recently retired from Bridgend County Borough Council and has worked in the streets and streetworks area for many years. GeoPlace said he has been involved with and made valuable contributions to various working groups, and made an impact with the JAG(UK) community that represents highways and roads authorities.
Nick Chapallaz, managing director of GeoPlace, said: “A key focus of the 2018 Exemplar Awards is on those custodians who have invested time in creating and continually improving their processes and who have made and achieved a real commitment to improving both the accuracy and quality of the data submitted to GeoPlace.”
