Microsoft has announced a plan to make its operations carbon negative by 2030.
The company has also said it is aiming, by 2050, to remove all the carbon it has emitted to the environment by electrical consumption since it was founded in 1975.
Its corporate headquarters in the US has announced the move, saying it has an aggressive programme to cut carbon emissions by itself and in its supply and value chain.
The firm has also announced an initiative to use Microsoft technology to help its suppliers and customers around the world reduce their carbon footprints, and a $1 billion climate innovation fund to accelerate the global development of carbon reduction, capture and removal technologies.
Beginning next year, it will also make carbon reduction and explicit aspect of its procurement processes.

The news has come as Microsoft’s UK operation plans for a UKA Live discussion on the issue of technology in sustainability on 7 February. This will cover the results of the recent ‘How Green is your Digital’ survey by UKAuthority and how the public sector can harness digital technology to improve environmental sustainability.
Participants in the discussion – to be broadcast live on UKAuthority – include: Mattie Yeta, UK government sustainability ICT lead at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs; Nadira Hussain, director of leadership development and research at public sector IT association Socitm; Ellen Wilson, industry solutions executive for local and regional government at Microsoft; and Helen Olsen Bedford, publisher of UKAuthority.
Live viewers will be able to put questions to the panel, providing an opportunity to strengthen the understanding of how the green ICT agenda relates to the activities of public authorities.
