A new digital pre-payment system will be introduced for the Mersey Tunnels next week, the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority has announced.
The T-FLOW system will replace the current Fast Tag system over time, beginning from 3 November.
Work has been carried out over the past few months to install automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras in all toll lanes of the Queensway and Kingsway tunnels.
The cameras will read vehicle number plates and activate the payment process if the vehicles are registered to an account. Once the payment has been approved the barrier will rise.
Initially only new customers will be added to the T-FLOW system and Fast Tag users can continue to use their tags. Cash and contactless payments will still be available for tunnel users who prefer to pay for their crossing this way.
The authority said the website will also be upgraded to support online self-service.
A spokesperson added that the main supplier to the project has been emovis, a specialist in toll based mobility solutions.
Continued investment
