The Maritime and Coastguard Agency has completed the installation of new infrastructure to support its radio network.
It said the upgraded network, which combines full fibre and microwave technology, has now become operational for the length of the country under the Radio Network Infrastructure Replacement Programme.
It provides connections for 163 remote radio sites to support emergency response along 11,000 miles of coastline.
The first installations took place in December 2020.
Assistant Chief Coastguard Matthew Leat said: “The national radio network is integral in supporting our mission of preventing the loss of life on the coast and at sea, enhancing our ability to respond to emergencies across the UK.”
The network has been developed by Neos Networks with Telent Technology Services, replacing a legacy copper infrastructure, with high capacity circuits connecting the remote sites to the agency’s three data centres.
