Environmental sustainability is becoming a major issue in public services, and digital technology is a core element of in efforts to make it happen.
Local and regional government are key players in the campaign, both in how they approach their own operations, and in their use of digital to develop strategies that lay the ground for a greener future in their communities.
Many are becoming aware of the effort but still in the early stages of understanding how they can harness digital tech in the cause of sustainability.
In support of this, UKAuthority and Microsoft have produced a white paper on the subject, exploring how local and regional authorities and their partners can use technology to make themselves greener organisations, and in turn to combine this with their drive for efficiency.
Titled How Green is our Digital? it looks at several elements of the effort, from utilising mobile and flexible working tools, an increased use of cloud services, initiatives for the re-use and recycling of digital products, the deployment of internet of things networks to create cleaner local environments, and the use of cutting edge data tools in decision making in urban planning, transport and infrastructure investments.
Possibilities are being discovered and the pioneers are making deployments, and the opportunities to learn are increasing by the day.
The white paper provides an ideal starting point, and an extra source of insights for those who have already begun to develop an understanding.
