Edtech charity LGfL – The National Grid for Learning – has made Chromebooks available for schools at a heavily discounted price in an effort to bring more children into remote learning.
It said the computers are available at £99.99 each. This comes amid fears that there could be further disruption from school closures and individual pupils having to isolate at home due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
John Jackson (pictured), CEO of LGfL, urged local authorities in areas of high deprivation to fund laptops for children with no access to remote learning.
“There are 4.3 million children living in poverty in the UK. We simply cannot sit and watch the 18-month attainment gap between the haves and have nots widen further,” he said.
“It’s time that we all stand together to help schools during this continuing crisis and the devastation and growing social divide that it creates to build brighter futures for all our young people.”
Under its #BridgeTheDivide initiative, LGfL has already delivered over 200,000 new and recycled devices to schools, and claims this has saved an estimated total of £7 million.
