The Local Government Association (LGA) and IT industry association techUK have agreed on a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to promote digital innovation in local government.
It became effective on 1 April as a 12-month framework for joint working, knowledge sharing and policy engagement, aimed at aligning local authorities’ needs with the capabilities of the technology industry.
It will involve a series of workshops, roundtables, webinars and joint consultations, and techUK having a seat on the LGA’s Local Government Digital Committee.
The two organisations will also work together on a project-by-project basis to address shared priorities such as procurement, skills development, cyber security and resilience, AI and innovation. Initiatives may include research, pilot programmes, or the development of practical resources, with each project adhering to the internal governance and procurement procedures of the two organisations.
There will also be an effort to provide market intelligence for councils and help the technology industry navigate the environment of local government.
Smarter services
Julian David, CEO of techUK, said: “This partnership is a welcome opportunity for the tech sector to work more closely with local government. By building stronger links between councils and the tech industry, we can support the delivery of smarter, more resilient services that improve lives and strengthen trust."
Joanna Killian, CEO of the LGA, commented: “This landmark MoU between techUK and the LGA marks a pivotal step in unlocking the transformative potential of digital technology for local government. Recognising the urgent need for innovation in local government, the partnership between techUK and the LGA will champion collaboration, highlight the vital role of SMEs and help improve service delivery.
“By fostering stronger connections, we aim to harness cutting edge solutions and agile expertise to build thriving, resilient, and digitally empowered communities."
A review of the MoU’s impact will take place after 12 months, with a view to continuing partnership.
