Council's MoreForMe app provides discounts for minimum spend in local shopping area

Lewisham Council has created a mobile app to give shoppers discounts in two of its local shopping areas – Deptford High Street and Blackheath Village.

Named MoreForMe, it has been developed with technology company Better Cities, and can work with a smartphone or tablet.

The website for the app shows that London local authority said that two dozen businesses in Deptford have so far signed up to provide the discounts, while 10 in the more upmarket Blackheath have done so. The council said it can effectively remove the parking fees for drivers using the service.

After the app is downloaded an activation Quick Response Code can be scanned from stickers on parking meters around the shopping areas. They can then show this to retailers, all of which have MoreForMe signage in their stores, to obtain discounts against a minimum spend. The minimum amount varies between shops.

The app also provides information on high streets, providing shoppers with a further encouragement to shop with local businesses.

It has also been piloted in Sheffield under the city council's Smart Lab Initiative. Better cities has received funding for such projects from the EU Frontier Cities programme.
