Leeds City Council has revealed plans for an online portal to support young people with training and careers information.

It is aiming to go live with the Careers, Information, Advice and Guidance portal during the summer, working with the locally based specialist in the area U-Explore, making use of the company’s Start platform and building on the existing startprofile.com platform for careers guidance.

A spokesperson for the council said it will provide a resource to complement rather than replace the work done by local schools and colleges.

It will be available for use in schools or at home, and include interactive e-learning activities along with a range of information on options such as courses and apprenticeships. Users will be able to build a profile and the council will be able to collect data to help it in providing support.

Strategic step

Councillor Jonathan Pryor, Leeds’ executive member for learning, skills and employment, said: “This is an important strategic step within the wider context of our city’s inclusive economic growth strategy, which is supporting billions of pounds of inward investment, regeneration and business growth to Leeds.

“Not only will all young people be able to access a wealth of information and new e-learning activities, including the creation of a digital portfolio, to develop and build their own career aspirations, schools, the council and wider stakeholders will also be able to access and use a wealth of data which will be created through the new platform.

“This information will be crucial in ensuring that we are tailoring the support which is available to each individual young person in the best possible way, and also be a key component in guiding and influencing our wider IAG strategy moving forward.”
