Jisc has set up an online community of practice to promote the use digital storytelling in further and higher education.
The membership organisation for edtech services in the sector has partnered with experts from Durham University and Ulster University on the project, and made the forum available through its website.
Digital storytelling uses multi-media tools such as video, images and audio to construct immersive narratives and bring content to life. Jisc said that students and staff are increasingly using it as a tool for expression and communication, but there has been no dedicated space for sharing best practice across UK higher and further education until now.
Chris Thomson, programme lead, teaching, learning and assessment at Jisc said: “We’re sometimes guilty of ignoring storytelling as an important part of learning. Stories are how we allocate meaning to experience and create connections with other people.
“I think as our society becomes more and more automated thanks to artificial intelligence, those people who are able to communicate effectively, build empathy and engage each other on a human level are going to become more important than ever, and we will see storytelling play a huge part in this.”
