A new international cyber security threat intelligence sharing network has been launched to help research and education organisations prevent and mitigate cyber attacks.
Jisc, the UK not-for-profit technology services provider for tertiary education, has entered a partnership with organisations in the US, Canada and Australia to use the open source Malware Information Sharing Platform (MISP).
The organisation said the move was instigated by its executive director of e-infrastructure, Steve Kennett, with the formal partnership now being launched after a memorandum of understanding was agreed in April.
Other members are the US higher education shared cyber security operations centre OmniSOC, the US Research and Education Networks Information Sharing and Analysis Center (REN-ISAC), the Canadian Shared Security Operations Centre (CanSSOC) and Australia’s national research and education network AARNet.
Kennett (pictured) said: “The threat from cyber criminals is growing and constantly evolving and, if we are to stay ahead of the curve, we must continually update our knowledge and adopt agile response mechanisms. As an automated platform, with real time data sharing capability, MISP will help us to do that.
“Jisc already works closely with other UK security agencies and its members to gather and share intelligence, which is crucial to maintaining robust cyber defences. I’m delighted that we can now help extend that benefit internationally.”
MISP provides a platform for sharing, storing and correlating indicators of compromise of targeted attacks, threat intelligence, and information on fraud, vulnerabilities and counter-terrorism. It is used by more than 6,000 organisations and plays host to a large number of communities for specific sectors.
